There are many reasons why elderly people might not feel like participating in certain activities. Sometimes, they physically can’t do that particular activity anymore. There could be emotional reasons that are causing them not to be able to do certain activities, as well. If your elderly loved one seems to be participating in activities less than they used to, there are some things you and their elderly care aide can do to help.

Plan the Time

The first thing you should do is schedule plenty of time for your elderly loved one to do a particular activity. Make sure they have enough time to work at their own pace. Sometimes an elderly person will quit an activity when they feel frustrated or stressed out. If you plan enough time for the activity, your senior might feel less stress. This could mean they want to do the activity instead of quitting.

Don’t Take Over

You shouldn’t just take over when your elderly loved one is trying to do an activity. However, you can offer to help in a polite manner. Just remember, some people won’t want any assistance. If your loved one hesitates to accept your help, ask them what they would like your help with. If they feel they have control over how much or what someone is helping with, they might be more willing to accept that help. In time, they might be more willing to let you and elderly care providers help them with certain tasks and activities.

Give Simple Instructions

Your elderly loved one might need a little help doing certain activities. You may only need to offer some simple instructions. When giving instructions, make sure you offer them one step at a time. Keep the instructions as simple as possible. You might also want to write them down. This way, your senior has them on hand for the future.

Be Flexible

It is important to always be flexible. People of all ages can have a change of heart every once in a while. On some days, a person can be excited about a particular activity. On other days, they might not be interested in that activity at all. In case this happens, it is important to be flexible with your elderly loved one.

Working with Elderly Care Services

There will be times when your elderly loved one isn’t intrigued by a certain task or activity. There will be times when they can’t do an activity. Be sure you talk to your elderly loved one and figure out what they need help with and seek assistance from their elderly care services providers. If you use the tips above, you can help your elderly loved one to participate in more activities.
